TPL car insurance in Albania: when it expires and how to renew
Updated: 8 October 2026
TPL insurance (third-party liability) is compulsory for every vehicle on the road. It covers the damage you cause to others in an accident.
When it expires
The expiry date is written on your insurance policy. Most people take it out for a year, but shorter periods also exist. Check it today: it’s one of the obligations that’s easiest to forget, because it comes round so rarely.
How to renew it
- Choose a licensed insurance company. The list of licensed companies is on the website of the Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF).
- Take your vehicle registration certificate and identity document with you (or send them, if the company allows online renewal).
- Pay, and keep the new policy, even as a photo on your phone.
Renew it before it expires
- Driving with an expired policy means a fine if you’re stopped.
- Worse still: if there’s an accident without valid insurance, you may have to pay for the damage yourself.
- Without valid insurance you can’t have the kolaudimi (the annual roadworthiness inspection) either.
The exact rules on fines and policy terms may change. For specific questions, ask your insurance company or check with the AMF.
How not to forget it
- Write down the expiry date as soon as you get the new policy.
- Set a reminder a week before, so you have time to compare prices.
- Plan for the amount in advance: a large yearly bill is easier when you split it across the months.
